К тому же в Средневековье, чтобы вещи дольше служили (мы к этом вернемся), все швы обметывались. Опытная швея вручную раскроит и сошьет такую рубашку за семь часов. Но ей нужна ткань, верно? На эту рубашку ушло пять ярдов ткани тонкой ткани (25 ниток на дюйм). По оценкам, ткачихи вручную делали два дюйма такой ткани в час, так что пять ярдов — это 72 часа. Но нитки надо сначала спрясть. 25 ниток на ярд, основа и уток дают 9000 ярдов пряжи. Реконструкторы полагают, что в Средние века пряха делала 4 ярда в час, что дает 2250 часов. Предположим, что они ошибаются, и утерянные секреты прядильного мастерства позволяют спрясть девять тысяч ярдов за 500 часов. У нас все равно получается 579 часов, т.е. $4200. А ведь мы еще не говорили о том, что перед тем, как начать прясть, надо вырастить лен, хлопок или овец.
Интересно, что основные затраты в оценке получились на прядение. Это объясняет сложный покрой одежды: если уж вложились в ткань, то имеет смысл потратиться еще немного на шитье.

Quick google check found two sources for wages and prices in England. For 1600, these give estimates of between 140 and 229 hours of unskilled labour for a suit of clothing (not just a shirt). One prices a suit at 18 shillings and sixpence, the other at one pound 12 shillings. Farm labour earned around one penny an hour, urban unskilled labour a bit more. So these estimates are out by quite a bit, even though clothing was obviously much more expensive.

Experiments have suggested that the entire process of preparing the heavy te-pa textile took at least 287 days (59 days of cleaning and combing, 195–700 days of spinning, and 33 days of weaving), whereas the more delicate pa-we-a textile required approx. 232 days of work (35 days of cleaning and combing, 175 days of spinning, and 22 days of weaving).3 It was assumed that spinning and weaving required 10 hours of work a day.

Еще одна тонкость — обычно для получения конечного сырья скручивают 2 или 3 одиночных нити в одну. При этом закрутка нитей и закрутка волокон в них идет в разном направлении.

Это убирает склонность нити с собиранию в крубок, повышает ее износоустойчивость и делает ее мягче.

А так вопрос — какое качество сырья нужно, какие требование, пробоподготовка? Я слышал, что нужно чесать, умасливать….

For the roughly 65,000cm2 amount of (admittedly quite rough) linen required (which in turn required 12,600m of thread), they figure it took 25 hours to break, scutch and hackle the flax, 575 hours to spin it into thread, 75 hours to weave the thread into fabric (including loom setup time), and 8 hours to measure and cut the fabric (alas, the linothorax is laminated, not sewn, so they have no data for the sewing portion).

Eve Fischer has done a similar calculation (but with back-of-the-envelope estimates rather than a detailed study) estimating that 41,804cm2 (5×1 yards) of fabric would require c. 8,230m of thread which would in turn demand something like 7 hours of sewing, 72 for weaving, 500 or so for spinning.

J.S. Lee (op. cit., 51) figures a 14th century weaver (with those fancier looms and spinning wheels) could weave around 2 yards of fabric per day from roughly 6lbs of spun yarn while a given spinner might spin about 1lbs of yarn per day; assuming a 12-hour work-day that comes out to about 6 hours per yard weaving (a little more than twice as fast as Fischer of Aldrete’s vertical loom weavers) and 36 hours per yard spinning (three times faster than the hand-spinners).
